ADULT: Females up to 14mm, males up to 9mm. A walnut brown and black species varying in shades with a darker central portion to the upper abdomen edged in wavy dark and cream lines. The body is quite flattened so as to help the spider hide in the smallest crevice. BEHAVIOUR: Spins web during the night where attempts to catch moths and other nocturnal insects, hence the common name 'Evening Spider'. This spider will bite humans if provoked and will cause itchiness and a burning sensation followed by a red patch with white lumps. HABITAT: Found beneath bark of trees, on wooden posts or old gates. DISTRIBUTION: Widespread throughout Britain. PERIOD: Males best found throughout the summer months, females all year. |
